Mr Chan Chi-wing, Former Chairman of the Ching Hoy Lau Mutual Aid Committee
In Yue Kwong Chuen, everyone addresses Chan Chi Wing as “Big Brother Wing”. He laughs that this nickname originated from a time he treated neighbours at a dinner: “It was just a meal, but who knew the whole estate would start calling me Big Brother!” Yet, this title also symbolises his spirit of selfless contribution over the years. Before retiring, he was a construction engineer who actively participated in voluntary work and served as an auxiliary police officer, shouldering multiple social responsibilities.
As the former Chairman of the Ching Hou Lau Mutual Aid Committee, Chan was always willing to go the extra mile. Whether it was changing locks or replacing light bulbs—trifling matters of daily life—he would attend to them personally without hesitation. He is most proud of the unity and mutual aid among the neighbours. Back then, the Mutual Aid Committee gathered residents’ views and acted as a bridge for communication with Housing Society staff. He states frankly that the Housing Society’s support and care for residents were crucial reasons why this spirit of mutual aid could endure: “That is why our relationships are so harmonious.” Although the Mutual Aid Committees have recently fulfilled their historic role, this mutual trust and coordination between residents and the Housing Society continues to this day, serving as the cornerstone of community harmony.
Chan’s selfless spirit of helping others has also been passed down to the next generation. His younger daughter has inherited her father’s “mantle”; whenever neighbours are in need, she proactively helps them with simple home repairs. This care, passed down from generation to generation, makes Yue Kwong Chuen not just a secure home, but a warm, extended family.
